Career Choice

1/20/2026

I teach seniors in high school Economics and Personal Finance.  Each semester we have a unit on Career Choice.  They take a interest quiz to possibly see what jobs would match their interests.  I had one ask a question: “Doesn’t God have a plan, what job does he want me to do?”

That is a tough question.  I do believe God has called people to certain ministries such as a pastor, missionary or worship leader.  But what about those that are not called to those vocations?

This is what I believe.  Matthew 6:33 states: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”  I think what God cares about is that you seek first His Kingdom, meaning that I Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” We should work and be servants for God.  God will use you to touch others whatever job you have.  Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

At the end of Matthew 6:33 it says all these things will be added to you.  What things? Matthew 6:31-32 the versus just before tell us “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.”  What will God provide?  Focus on pursuing God's Kingdom and living righteously above worldly concerns.  When we live to much in the world, we can lose the connection to our Father.  He will care for you.

When you go searching for the “perfect job, perfect home, perfect life” it can become an idol.  Something you “worship” more than the Lord.  Worship means spending time pursuing, deeming it highly worthy.  If you keep pursuing that job you may miss what God has planned for you right now.

What does God call us to do?  Love him and love others and that can happen at any job you are at.
