I read the news today, oh boy

3/2/26

“I read the news today, oh boy,” was the opening line of a song written by the Beatles in 1967.  Today I felt like saying that.  While at work so many people were asking each other the anxious questions about the news. I heard about people and their fear and what about prepping?

I had to take a moment and put my own feelings into perspective.

James 4: 13-14 tells us, “Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”  We don’t know what will happen tomorrow so how are we to live our life today?  James 4:15 says “Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”  We are to look to our Heavenly Father and live in the joy of the Lord today.  Not in fear for tomorrow.

Matthew 10:28 says, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”   What do I need to be doing?  Not fearing what my country, my city or my fellow man is doing around me but making sure I have faith in the One who brings eternal life.

Now I’m not saying we should not care about anything, just spend all our money and have a great time.  The bible tells us we Proverbs 6:6-8 “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”  We are to work and pay our bills and save for lean times.  1 Timothy 5:8” Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” God commands we take care of our household and that includes retirement savings and an emergency fund.

What God specifically says is DO NOT FEAR.  When fear takes over and becomes and obsession with prepping for doomsday – you have let fear become an idol in your life and you are “worshipping” or caring more about prepping than believing God will take care of you.

Matthew 6:25-34 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

We aren’t to worry about the future, about food or your life.  We are to seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness.  Jesus says that worry is just as destructive to the spiritual life as is greed. The disciples must not worry about the basic needs of life for such worry stems from little faith. (Asbury Bible Commentary)

Matthew 6:19 -21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

God tells us not to live in fear, He will provide as He did for the Israelites. Exodus 16:4 “Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.”  They were only to gather what they needed for the day, not for tomorrow.

So When I hear the news, my response will be :The Lord my God is in control, I do not fear!

Psalm 188:6 “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me
?”

Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand
.”
