I'm with you to the end of the line

3/24/26

There is a friendship in the Marvel Universe between Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Solider) that demonstrates the strength of loyalty.  In their early years in Brooklyn, Bucky was Steve’s protector—the charismatic, physically dominant best friend who shielded the scrawny, idealistic Steve from alleyway bullies and the loneliness of being an orphan.

As the years progressed and Steve became Captain America, the dynamic flipped; Steve became the guardian, leading the rescue mission to save Bucky from a HYDRA facility and later spending decades refusing to give up on him as the Winter Soldier. Their friendship is a cycle of mutual salvation, where each man serves as the other's last remaining link to their original humanity and a home that no longer exists.

Their famous vow they would say to each other: "I'm with you 'til the end of the line."

That’s the kind of person I want on my side.

God says this to us: Matthew 28:20 God tells us that “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

He promises He is always with us.  Joshua 1:9: "...Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go". Deuteronomy 31:6: "...the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Psalm 23:4: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me...". Zephaniah 3:17: "The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves..."

He will fight for you and protect you.  2 Thessalonians 3:3  "But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one". John 10:28 "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand"

The Bible tells us that Jesus is even interceding for us now in heaven. Romans 8:34  “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us”

Just like Bucky and Steve serving as a link to their original humanity and a home that no longer exists, Jesus is our link to eternal salvation.  He sacrificed Himself so that we may live with Him forever in heaven.  Our home is not here; we have a different home.  Hebrews 11:16 “Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them”

Just as Steve’s heart was welcoming Bucky he was patient with Bucky as he had to heal and recover from his past.  Jesus is patient with us as we heal from our past and change to become more like Him.  2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

Also, just as Steve saw no “Winter Soldier” he saw only Bucky, He saw the kid from Brooklyn he loved.  Jesus sees us washed white as snow, heirs to the throne.  Galatians 4:7 “So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.”

Jesus is the loyal, true friend, that never leaves, that always defends and always loves.  He is our Super Hero that protects us.
