Peace that passes all understanding

Do you ever have moments where fear and doubt come crashing in?  Green Day summed it up well in their song; “Basket Case”

Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About nothin' and everything all at once?
I am one of those melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone, no doubt about it

[Chorus]
Sometimes, I give myself the creeps
Sometimes, my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Am I just stoned?

Does your mind ever replay old conversations, ruminating on what you should have said?  Does your heart ever race at the thought of the future? Do you ever talk to yourself about things that “could happen” even if they most likely never will?  Do you feel on edge, irritable and does it even crash into your sleep at times?

John 8:44 tells us that the devil is the “father of all lies.”  (You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies)  He creates anxiety by filling our mind with potential, unlikely or imaginary scenarios.  He can feed our insecurity, he can twist situations to make us feel overwhelmed. He creates “what if” scenarios that make us focus on the unknown rather than God’s protection.

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV): "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour"

Ephesians 6:11 (NIV): "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes".

He goal is to move us away from relying on God.

2 Corinthians 11:3 tells us that Satan can deceive us into being led astray from our faith.

(But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ)

BUT!!!!  This is the most important part – BUT!!!! I John 3:8 “The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.”

JESUS came to destroy the devil’s work!!!

  • Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God... will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus".
  • Isaiah 41:10 (NIV): "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand".
  • 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV): "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you".
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV): "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind".
  • John 14:27 (NIV): "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you... Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid".
  • Psalm 56:3 (NIV): "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you".

Jesus fills us with peace, hope and joy!  There is no fear in Him.  There is no anxiety or pressure.  Jesus brings supernatural peace!

We can change the tune to:

I’ve still got joy in chaos
I’ve got peace that makes no sense
I won’t be going under
I’m not held by my own strength

'Cause I build my life on Jesus
He's never let me down
He's faithful in every season
So why would He fail now?

He won't
He won't
He won't fail
He won't fail
